Blue Cross Blue Shield dental claims: where to submit

There is no single national address for Blue Cross Blue Shield dental claims. BCBS is a federation of independent local Blue plans, so you route each claim to the member's plan using the three-character alpha prefix on their ID card, usually by submitting electronically to your local Blue plan. Here is how to send BCBS dental claims to the right place the first time.

Blue Cross Blue Shield dental claims quick reference

BCBS is not one company, so routing, not a single address, is what gets a claim paid. Always follow the specific instructions on the member's ID card.

How to submit Blue Cross Blue Shield dental claims

There is no universal BCBS address because BCBS is about 30 independent, locally operated Blue plans. The job is to route the claim to the member's home plan, and the three-character alpha prefix at the front of the member ID is how you identify it. In most cases you submit the claim to your local Blue plan, and for an out-of-area member the BlueCard program forwards it to the member's home plan and pays you through your local plan.

Report the member ID exactly as printed, including the alpha prefix. Do not add, drop, or change characters. The prefix is what makes the claim route to the right plan, and an altered ID is a common reason a BCBS claim is rejected or misrouted.

Two important exceptions. Stand-alone dental products usually have no alpha prefix, so follow the specific claims address or payer ID printed on that dental card rather than routing through the medical Blue plan. And the Federal Employee Program dental plan (FEP BlueDental) is administered nationally through bcbsfepdental.com, with its own claims address and payer ID on the FEP BlueDental card.

Blue Cross Blue Shield dental claims FAQ

What is the mailing address for Blue Cross Blue Shield dental claims?

There is no single BCBS address. Route each claim to the member's local Blue plan, identified by the three-character alpha prefix on the ID card, usually by submitting electronically to your local plan. For out-of-area members, use the BlueCard program through your local Blue plan.

What is the alpha prefix and why does it matter?

The alpha prefix is the first three characters of the member ID, and it identifies which independent Blue plan the member belongs to. It is how a claim is routed to the correct plan, so report the member ID exactly as printed, prefix included, without adding or dropping characters.

Where do stand-alone BCBS dental plans go?

Stand-alone dental products usually have no alpha prefix. Follow the specific claims address or payer ID printed on that dental ID card instead of routing the claim through the member's medical Blue plan.

How do I submit FEP BlueDental claims?

The Blue Cross Blue Shield Federal Employee Program dental plan, FEP BlueDental, is administered nationally rather than by local Blue plans. Use the claims address and payer ID printed on the FEP BlueDental card or at bcbsfepdental.com, not your local Blue plan's medical claims address.
