D5130 dental code: immediate maxillary denture.

D5130 is the CDT code for an immediate maxillary denture, a complete upper denture placed immediately after the remaining teeth are extracted. It is fabricated in advance so the patient leaves with teeth on the same day as the extractions rather than waiting for the sites to heal. It differs from D5110, the conventional complete upper denture made after healing.

When to use D5130

Use D5130 when delivering a complete upper denture immediately after the remaining maxillary teeth are extracted. The denture is fabricated before the extractions so it can be placed the same day, allowing the patient to heal with a prosthesis in place. The defining feature is the immediate placement relative to the extractions on the upper arch.

Common clinical scenarios: A patient having the remaining upper teeth extracted who does not want to be without teeth during healing. A transition to a complete upper denture where esthetics and function are maintained through the healing period. A planned full clearance of the maxillary arch with same-day prosthesis delivery.

Do NOT use D5130 for: A conventional complete upper denture made after healing (use D5110). A lower immediate denture (use D5140). A partial denture. A definitive reline or replacement denture made later, which is reported with its own code.

D5130 vs related denture codes

Click any code to see the difference.

D5130
Immediate maxillary denture

A complete upper denture placed immediately after extractions, fabricated in advance so the patient is not without teeth during healing.

D5110
Complete maxillary denture

A conventional complete upper denture made after the extraction sites have healed and the ridge has stabilized. Not placed at the time of extraction.

Billing tip: The timing relative to extraction decides the code. If the denture is placed the same day as the extractions, it is D5130. If it is made after healing, it is D5110. The record should show whether the denture was immediate or conventional.

Why D5130 claims get denied

Extractions not documented

An immediate denture is placed after extractions. If the record does not show the remaining maxillary teeth were extracted, the immediate denture has no basis and the payer questions the claim. Document the extractions and the plan to deliver the denture the same day.

Wrong arch code

D5130 is the maxillary code. Reporting it for a lower denture is an arch mismatch. The mandibular immediate denture is D5140. When the documented arch does not match the code, the claim is denied. Confirm upper versus lower before reporting.

Benefit not verified

Denture benefits vary widely by plan. Some plans have waiting periods, missing tooth clauses, or frequency limits that affect coverage. Verify the prosthetic benefit before treatment so the patient understands coverage and the claim is not denied for an eligibility reason.

Frequency limits on prosthetics

Plans limit how often a denture is payable. If the patient had a prior denture within the plan window, a new one can be denied. Check the prosthetic frequency rules and the patient's history before fabricating the immediate denture.

Documentation checklist for D5130

Extractions recorded

Document the extraction of the remaining maxillary teeth that the immediate denture replaces. The immediate placement depends on the extractions.

Maxillary arch confirmed

Confirm the denture is for the upper arch. D5130 is maxillary, while D5140 is the lower immediate denture.

Immediate placement noted

Record that the denture was placed immediately after extraction, which is what separates D5130 from the conventional D5110.

Benefit verification

Note the prosthetic benefit, any waiting period, missing tooth clause, and frequency rules verified before treatment.

Healing follow-up plan

Document the plan for adjustments and a reline as the tissues heal, and report a definitive reline separately when it is performed.

D5130 FAQ

What is D5130 dental code?

D5130 is the CDT code for an immediate maxillary denture. It is a complete upper denture that is fabricated in advance and placed immediately after the remaining teeth are extracted, so the patient is not without teeth during healing.

What is the difference between D5130 and D5110?

D5110 is a complete maxillary denture made conventionally after the extraction sites have healed. D5130 is an immediate maxillary denture placed at the same visit as the extractions. The difference is the timing relative to extraction and healing.

Does D5130 include relines or adjustments?

Immediate dentures usually need adjustments and a reline as the tissues heal and remodel. Whether those are included or reported separately depends on the plan. Verify the plan rules, because a definitive reline is often a separate procedure with its own code.

Is D5130 for upper or lower teeth?

D5130 is the maxillary, or upper, immediate denture. The mandibular, or lower, immediate denture is reported with D5140. Make sure the arch on the claim matches the code so the upper and lower are not mixed up.

Why do D5130 claims get denied?

Common reasons include missing the extractions that justify an immediate denture, mismatching the arch with the code, missing benefit verification for dentures, frequency limits on prosthetics, and documentation that does not support an immediate placement.

Will the patient need a new denture later?

An immediate denture is often considered transitional because the bone and tissue remodel during healing, which loosens the fit. Many patients need a reline or a definitive denture later. Plans may treat the eventual replacement under their prosthetic frequency rules.
